Football Against Obesity

First form students will this term engage in a six-week programme, aimed at promoting physical activity and wellness. The programme which is dubbed Football Against Obesity will be launched in Antigua and Barbuda on September 17th.

The secondary school-based programme targeting eleven to twelve-year-olds, their physical education teachers and coaches will include classroom discussions, and physical and recreational exercises relating to football. The classroom sessions will stress the importance of physical activity, a balanced diet, maintaining good oral hygiene and the dangers of smoking. Parent workshops will also be facilitated to ensure that positive lifestyle choices are undertaken by the entire families. A major feature of the programme will be a two-day youth football tournament which will emphasize key health messages.

The participating schools in the Football Against Obesity programme are the All Saints, Jennings, Pares, and Clarehall Secondary Schools, as well as the Irene B. Williams Secondary, Ottos Comprehensive Secondary, Sir Novelle Richards Academy, Christian Faith Academy, and the St. Anthony’s Secondary.

On Sunday, September 9th, Burton Albion trainers will arrive in Antigua and Barbuda to train the local trainers. The three-day ‘Train the Trainers’ Workshop’, will equip the local physical education teachers and coaches with the requisite skills to execute the programme.

Football Against Obesity is an initiative organized by the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Sports, Culture and National Festivals, in partnership with Burton Albion Community Trust of England and the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in the United Kingdom.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment, Hon. Molwyn Joseph, hailed the Football Against Obesity initiative as visionary. He noted that the programme will concentrate on theory and the practical and will go a long way in advancing the culture of wellness in Antigua and Barbuda. The Minister also thanked Antigua and Barbuda’s High Commissioner in the United Kingdom, Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill for her role in facilitating the six-week exercise.

Using the slogans ‘Educate, Exercise, Enjoy,’ the Football Against Obesity, Antigua and Barbuda, will be formally launched on Monday, September 17th, at the Precision Centre on Paynters Main Road, starting at 10.00 am.
